The Namibia Youth Energy Forum Event, held on June 29, 2024, at the Namcor Auditorium in Windhoek, was an inspiring event that brought together young minds under the theme “Decoding the Local Content Draft.” The event empowered us, highlighting young people’s critical role in the emerging oil and gas sector.
As a youth attendee, I was excited to witness firsthand the enthusiasm and dedication of my peers. The event was a call to action for the youth to engage in conversations about the future of our energy industry. Every participant in the room was eager to learn and contribute to the discussion.
The focus on understanding local content was the event’s most important feature. The speakers shared understandings into how local content policies can support economic growth. These considerations educated the youth with the information required to safeguard the interests of our communities.
The event showed that youth participation in discussions around oil and gas is important. Speakers urged us to actively participate in these events and to view ourselves as stakeholders in the industry. They emphasized on the importance to speak up and how our efforts might bring constructive change.
Ms Nillian Mulemi the CEO of PETROFUND, who did a key presentation on “Framework for building local capacities in Namibia’s Oil and Gas sector” emphasized on the importance of reskilling & upskilling of the youth to thrive in the Oil and Gas industry and very importantly to have transferable skills to take a of the available opportunities.
As I reflect on the event, I am filled with a sense of purpose and determination. The event was a powerful reminder that we have a crucial role to play in the oil and gas discussions. We, the youth must continue to educate ourselves and actively participate in forums like this.
Mr Fanuel Shinedima, CEO of the Namibia Youth Energy Forum stated, ” The biggest highlight of the Namibia Youth Energy Forum has been the impact the Forum has made since it only started this year”
The Namibia Youth Energy Forum Event demonstrated the importance of youth involvement and the impact of networking. As we move forward, it is crucial that we, the youth, remain engaged and proactive. By doing so, we can ensure that the oil and gas sector evolves in a way that benefits all Namibians.
Let’s take this momentum and continue to drive the conversation, advocate for local content, and build a sustainable future for Namibia. Together, we can make a difference.
