The European Union (EU) commissioner for energy, Kadri Simson, is in Namibia this week to enhance the EU’s energy relations with the country and its southern neighbour, South Africa.

In a statement, the EU said this visit follows the endorsement of a road map for the EU-Namibia strategic partnership on sustainable raw material value chains and renewable hydrogen by commission president Ursula von der Leyen and late head of state Hage Geingob in October last year.

“The road map is supported by €1 billion in investments by the EU, its member states and European financial institutions. Commissioner Simson will attend the Global African Hydrogen Summit in Windhoek and participate in panel discussions,” it read.

The summit, which kicked off on Tuesday, draws to a close today.

Simson will also attend the signing ceremony of several programmes funded by EU institutions and member states to support the clean energy transition and hydrogen development in Namibia.
