As part of its ongoing commitment to building national capacity and empowering Namibians to participate meaningfully in the petroleum industry, the Petroleum Training and Education Fund (PETROFUND) in collaboration with leading oil and gas service company Subsea7, which has offices in Windhoek is proud to announce the deployment of three Namibian candidates for specialised training in subsea operations.

The candidates, Leonard Johannes, Erasmus Shikongo and Rikardo Samuyumbe are graduates of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) with qualifications in Power Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. They were selected to participate in a specialised Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) Pilot Technician training programme at the Netherlands Maritime University College in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The fully funded scholarship, provided by PETROFUND is valued at over N$870,000.

Upon completing the programme, Subsea7 has committed to providing the trainees with on-the job training (OJT). After the successful completion of the OJT, the service company will employ them as part of its global offshore ROV workforce. The trainees will also be enrolled in Subsea7’s Competence and Assurance Programme designed to support their professional development. In addition, Subsea7 will cover the costs of the OPITO-certified Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) and medical fitness assessments, enabling them to meet the requirements for working in offshore environments.

ROV pilot technicians play a critical role in the oil and gas and marine sectors by operating remotely controlled vehicles in underwater environments that are often too deep or too dangerous for human divers. This is particularly relevant given that Namibian offshore waters are classified as ultra-deep. The role involves the operation, maintenance and repair of ROV systems.

This initiative reflects the shared commitment of the Government of the Republic of Namibia through PETROFUND, academia through NUST and the industry through Subsea7 to equip Namibian youth with high-demand, specialised technical skills essential for the upstream petroleum sector. As the country moves closer to its first Final Investment Decision (FID) by oil and gas operators, this proactive training underscores Namibia’s readiness to support and participate in future oil production activities.
