The Petroleum Training and Education Fund (PETROFUND) is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2026 Scholarship Application Process, running from today until 7 October 2025 at 13:00. This initiative comes in response to the multiple oil and gas discoveries in the Orange Basin offshore Namibia and continued exploration activities.
In anticipation of the next phases of the upstream petroleum sector, PETROFUND is intensifying efforts to build a highly skilled workforce. The scholarships will equip Namibians with critical expertise ahead of the final investment decisions by petroleum exploration license holders who made discoveries in recent years.
The programme is aligned with the National Development Plan Six, which priorities human capital development, research and innovation as key drivers of economic transformation. By investing in specialised skills in petroleum-related fields, PETROFUND contributes to the creation of a knowledgeable and innovative workforce that will support research and ensure the sustainable utilization of Namibia’s natural resources.
For the 2026 academic year, PETROFUND will prioritise undergraduate studies in the Bachelor of Science in Geosciences and in engineering disciplines such as Civil, Marine, Chemical, Electrical, Power, Industrial and Mechanical Engineering at universities in the SADC region. Provision has also been made for Namibians wishing to pursue a Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology specialising in oil and gas at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Canada.
The fully funded scholarships will further cover a range of postgraduate programmes at both local and international universities. These include master’s degrees in Petroleum Geosciences at the University of Namibia, Exploration Geophysics, Reservoir Evaluation and Management, Aerospace Engineering, Drilling Engineering and Oil and Gas Law among others. The complete list of programmes can be accessed on the PETROFUND website at www.petrofund.org.
To qualify, undergraduate applicants must be Namibian citizens with excellent passes in Mathematics, Sciences and English at Grade 12 or Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level with a minimum of 30 points in five subjects. Postgraduate applicants must hold a relevant honours degree with a minimum average pass of 60%. Upon completion, beneficiaries are required to work in Namibia.
This year, PETROFUND has made special provision for prospective applicants in rural areas with limited or no access to online facilities. Such applicants may collect and submit their application forms at their nearest constituency or Regional Council offices during the application period.
PETROFUND urges all eligible Namibians with an interest in pursuing a career in the oil and gas industry to apply before the deadline. Our flagship scholarship programme continues to play a vital role in preparing Namibia’s workforce to ensure that the oil and gas industry becomes a catalyst for economic growth, energy security and environmental stewardship.
