The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme (NGH2P) bids farewell to its Founding Head of Programme and Green Hydrogen Commissioner, Mr James Mnyupe, effective 01 November 2025.
Since his appointment as the country’s first Green Hydrogen Commissioner in 2021, Mr Mnyupe
has been at the forefront of positioning Namibia as a continental leader in the green hydrogen
economy. Through his vision and dedication, and under the guidance of the Green Hydrogen
Council as well as the support of the Government of the Republic of Namibia, the nation has taken
remarkable strides in transforming a bold national idea into a tangible reality.
Over the past five years, under Mr Mnyupe’s leadership, the Programme has achieved significant
milestones, including:
- Mobilising over €120 million in investment into Namibia’s green hydrogen sector.
- Positioning Namibia as a benchmark in Africa, being among the first nations to establish a
green hydrogen industry. - Facilitating flagship projects such as HyIron-Oshivela, Cleanergy Solutions Namibia,
Daures Green Hydrogen Village, HDF Energy, and Zhero, with several already producing
green steel and ammonia. - Spearheading skills development initiatives, particularly through the Youth for Green
Hydrogen Scholarship Programme, which has enabled more than 180 Namibians to
pursue specialised training in renewable energy and hydrogen-related fields at both
vocational and postgraduate levels. - Contributing to job creation, with nearly 800 jobs generated across projects, ensuring
strong local participation in the sector’s growth. - Driving strategic frameworks, including the development of the Green Industrialisation
Blueprint and embedding green hydrogen priorities into Namibia’s Sixth National
Development Plan (NDP6).
Mr Mnyupe’s tenure has been defined by a deep commitment to advancing Namibia’s long-term
prosperity, particularly for its youth. His stewardship established the country as a global reference
point for innovative approaches to green industrialisation. Through his efforts, Namibia now
stands firmly on the world map as a leader in clean energy.
As he steps aside, Mr Mnyupe leaves behind a strong institutional foundation and a capable team
that will continue to carry forward the Programme’s vision. His contributions have not only
diversified Namibia’s economy but also laid the groundwork for sustainable industrialisation that
will benefit generations to come.
The Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme extends its profound gratitude to Mr Mnyupe for his
remarkable service, leadership, and dedication. His legacy will continue to inspire the sector’s
growth as Namibia advances its green industrialisation agenda.
The Programme reaffirms its commitment to sustaining the momentum he has built, working with
all stakeholders to ensure Namibia realises its full potential as a hub for clean energy and
sustainable development.
