Angolan oil and gas fabrication company Sonamet is eyeing regional expansion, with a particular focus on Namibia. Speaking to Energy Capital & Power at the Angola Oil & Gas 2025 conference in Luanda last month, Sandro Ferreira, Sonamet’s Marketing and Commercial Director, outlined the company’s ambitions to extend its operations beyond Angola.
“We are currently in discussions with the Namibian government and public institutions to explore how we can establish a competitive presence through tax incentives and free zones,” he said, adding that the expansion would allow Sonamet to better serve neighboring countries and leverage its existing infrastructure.
Sonamet’s track record in Angola underscores its capability and commitment to the oil and gas sector. The company has played a key role in several high-profile projects, including TotalEnergies’ CLOV Phase 3 development.
“The spool base was a project to support the development of CLOV. The idea was to showcase to the industry that we have created a facility that meets the technical demands and challenges of today’s industry,” said Ferreira. He also highlighted successful collaboration with Subsea 7 in operating the spool base, which was critical to the project’s timely delivery.
In addition to its work on CLOV, Sonamet has contributed to Chevron’s Sanha Lean Gas Connection project: “We not only built the jacket and the deck, but also the booster compressors. We are pioneers in Angola for such shallow water projects.”
Local content development remains central to Sonamet’s operations. “We have consistently maintained a local workforce of over 70%, focusing on training and retaining talent. In Namibia, we aim to integrate Namibians into our facilities, continuing our tradition of knowledge transfer,” said Ferreira, noting that the company recently trained 30 Namibian welders and pipe fitters.
