Following the success of technical decentralization efforts in the Omusati Region, a specialized Basic Maintenance Welding Training has officially launched yesterday in Swakopmund. This initiative marks a continued commitment to equipping Namibians with the hands-on skills necessary to thrive in the country’s evolving industrial landscape.
The five-day intensive program, running from Monday, February 16, to Friday, February 20, targets unemployed individuals and community members. By providing fundamental technical knowledge, the workshop aims to bridge the skills gap as Namibia prepares for rapid expansion in the Oil and Gas industry. As well as in the renewable energy sectors, such as Green Hydrogen and supporting sectors.
A Pathway to Economic Inclusion
The training focuses on those often left outside formal vocational frameworks, offering a practical entry point into the labor market. The Men on the Side of the Road (MSR) Project Namibia is one of the organisations that is benefiting from this basic welding training. The MSR Project is dedicated to supporting unskilled and semi-skilled men who gather daily for casual work. This welding course will teach some of its members how to weld. Ms. Crystal Beukes, CEO of the Men on the Side of the Road Project, emphasized the transformative nature of the program during the opening ceremony: “It is incredibly important to uplift people who are willing to learn new skills. For many of our participants, this basic maintenance welding course is a perfect start. It provides not just a technical foundation, but the confidence and opportunity to move from the sidelines into active roles within our local economy.”
A Collaborative International Effort
The program is made possible through a robust partnership between local and international stakeholders dedicated to grassroots empowerment. This collaborative model ensures that participants receive high-quality instruction and access to professional-grade equipment.
Key partners and sponsors include:
- Postcode Lottery (Germany): Main sponsor funding the training for participants.
- German Embassy to Namibia: Donated and sponsored the welding equipment for the training and future use.
- Intercultural Relations: International partner institution.
- WeldNAM: General Support.
- GSI Namibia: Provision of Trainers and Venue.
This workshop is a testament to the power of outreach, ensuring that high-value skills development reaches the coastal regions to bolster local industries and support families.
